Bio:
addiction - compulsive physiological and psychological need for a habit-forming substance or activity; being abnormally tolerant to and dependent on something; an abnormally strong craving; a habitual or compulsive involvement in an activity such as gambling; the state of being addicted; devotion, inclination; the reason why my car has a mind of its own and will make sudden turns into parking lots close to bookstores; the root cause of our storage problem at home; what brings me to bookmooch.com even if my least favorite activity is getting rid of my books.

"The book can produce an addiction as fierce as heroin or nicotine, forcing us to spend much of our lives, like junkies, in book shops and libraries, those literary counterparts to the opium den." - Phillip Adams

Yes, I'm an obsessive and compulsive book shopper and hoarder. And this addiction has been aggravated by other new addictions to networks like Shelfari, Multiply, and Facebook, which serve as boastboards for book acquisitions and completion. In Shelfari, there are community groups that make the hook go deeper. Collectively called the holy trinity of Pinoy Shelfari groups, Flips Flipping Pages, Bookay Ukay, and BookMooch Pilipinas, are just 3 of the 30 or so groups I've joined, in true maximalist fashion. Yes, to me, more is always more.

And then, here's Bookmooch, supposed to be the answer to getting rid of the books that threaten to engulf my household. But then again, out goes one book and in comes another. But I'm not complaining. I love how Bookmooch can get you hard-to-find books from other parts of the world.

"Book collecting is an obsession, an occupation, a disease, an addiction, a fascination, an absurdity, a fate. It is not a hobby. Those who do it must do it." - Jeanette Winterson

Get your fix. Mooch from me!

Help! We need floor space to walk on. Please mooch.

The different conditions of my books:
  • Looks brand new. Still shrink wrapped. Stayed in the shelves untouched. Going to the book mooch bin because of duplicates.
  • Bought new from the bookstore. But never read so pages are intact. But no longer shrink wrapped. Might have my name on the inside front cover. Pages may be yellowed due to tropical conditions.
  • Books bought new from the bookstore. Have been read. Will have my name on the inside front cover. Some pages might be dogeared because I mark words I want to look up.
  • Books bought pre-owned. Might bear the markings of previous owners. With the creases and dogears of a well-loved book. Price sticker scars marring the front or back covers.

At any rate, I try to be as specific as I can be in describing the condition of my books. My books are not covered with plastic. Those remind me of plastic covered sofas. Animals and smokers are not allowed to set foot inside the house so those shouldn't be factors unless books have been previously owned by others.

Packaging the stash: I enclose your books in ziplocked plastic, folded and taped snugly around the book.

International packages are packed in bubble padded envelops sent by surface mail. That means the book can reach the moocher any where from 3 weeks to 6 months. Please be patient.

Domestic mooches are sent via 2Go. I try to send within a week after accepting the mooch, though this is not always possible when I'm out of town or trapped in days of 9to5 training gigs.

These books will stay on my shelves. Can't cold turkey. It's a rather eclectic collection. I like the following book categories: novels, short stories, Christian, culinary, design, home, art, business, marketing, travel writing, business writing, fashion, photography, Jose Saramago, Margaret Atwood, John Maxwell, Robert Fulghum, classics, chick lit, humor, books about books, communication textbooks, sage publishing, biographies, pretty coffee table books, uhm okay just visit: http://www.shelfari.com/islandhopper.

Pushers, these are the stuff I'm looking for: The perfect white shirt, a diet and exercise buddy, and the answer to world hunger. The books on my wish list are books on writing and books that get a lot of raves in shelfari. Yes, I am covetous; easily influenced and pressured by peers, friends who bug me to read something they've read, and people who are so smart I want to be like them when I grow up.

If you're sending me books from another country, please cover the price with a marker and indicate that you're sending a gift with no commercial value. Thank you!
