Cynthia Welsh (USA: AZ) (2009/02/13): Firefly Lane is a story about a friendship that starts out in Jr. High and then continues onto adulthood. As I read this book, I kept analyzing if this is a mutually beneficial relationship or if Tully was the taker and Kate the giver. It is always Tully getting Kate to promise that she will be her friend forever and will always be there for her. These two friends go through a lot together and even suffer through a long period of estrangement. In the end it is Kate’s struggle that brings them back together again. Tully seems to rise to the occasion and puts aside her selfish life. But does she really? Is she just trying to offset her guilt and/or is she trying to step into Kate’s life and have it for herself?I had read mixed reviews on this book so almost did not read it. I did enjoy reading the book. However, I found some of the attempts at setting the scenes for the time periods to be stilted---almost just a list of popular songs of the time or a forced inclusion of some pop icon. My favorite part of the book was the author’s interview included in this Reading Group Gold edition where Hannah explains her motivation for writing the book.
mb (USA: MI) (2010/04/24): I tried to get into this book, but it did not grab me. It does have an interesting premise of connecting friend's lives via the music tastes of their era(s). Better luck to other readers.
Ellyn Karaffa (USA: WI) (2011/05/05): I absolutely LOVED this book! I read it while on vacation a few years ago with my mom (we shared it back and forth), and we both found ourselves quickly drawn into the lives of two young women whose friendship withstands the tests of time. If you turn the last page of this book without shedding a tear, feel butterflies flutter in your stomach, or busting out in a amazing, truly-happy-to-be-alive kind of smile, well, then I honestly don't even know what to say! 10 out of 10 in my eyes, an absolutely fantastic read!
