After the first one, I was anticipating what my brother used to call, "an exercise in word processing." I was happily wrong!! Martin has a wonderful ability to develop characters who at first glance are wicked and easy to hate, and then tempt the reader into feeling some compassion for them. This book takes the intrigue of the first and upends it all over the table, and in a mad scramble for control, the many characters are seen plotting and twisting, whether for their own wicked motivations, or for their valid and laudable principles. A whole new world opens up in this one as well, as Martin expands the map of the 7 kingdoms...but you'll have to read it yourself to learn more!
