Robert Wechsler (USA: CT) (2023/03/04): Moravia, who was the great postwar Italian writer, at least in English translation, here presents male rationality as a tragic weakness, that is, he's ahead of his time, anticipating feminism. The novel is strongest when the narrator/protagonist is working out his rational muscles, and weakest when there is extended dialogue, mostly in the second half. I definitely got tired of the narrator’s constant, back-and-forth reasoning, but that’s part of the point. Throw in multiple takes on Odysseus including, arguably, the novel itself, and you have a unique tale of how to ruin a marriage.
