Reviews: Rosa Maclin (USA: MI) (2013/03/16):
I just read a fascinating, compelling, heart-warming, encouraging and excellent novel called “Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close” by Jonathan Safran Foer. The book takes place in post-9/11 New York City. It's really about a coming-of-age story of Oskar Schell, a 9-year-old wonderful kid who loves to invent things, make jewelry, collect images, read fascinating books and try to find his place in the world while trying to find out where a key he found in his dad's closet belongs to. His journey takes him all over the five boroughs. He didn't visit everyone in New York. Just the people who had the last name Black because that was what was on the envelope in the blue vase Oskar's father had bought for his wife's anniversary present. Oskar had accidentally broken the vase. His journey to find who the key belongs to, kind of reminded me of his little scavenger hunts he would go on in Central Park. In a way, he was trying to be closer to his dad, but near the end of the story, he felt even more distant. Oh, another thing, when his school sent him and his classmates home early on the worst day, Oskar was home when his father called. He didn't pick up the phone when his father kept repeating was anyone there. He was just numb. Throughout the novel the reader gets little pieces about what happened. I don't think most people could take it in big chunks. It had to be divided up. Oskar's mom had him talk to a psychiatrist, but Oskar never liked the guy. He thought his mom was going to have him hospitalized. He was just processing his feelings differently. Do I think he could have opened up more with his mom or the doctor? Yeah, but different kids process traumatic events differently. Oskar has a loving mother and grandparents who care and love him very much and they're hurting, too. They have to heal together. In conclusion, I'll try not to give away too much. I really enjoyed this book. I hope to get an opportunity to watch the movie of the same name. I recommend this book to people 18+ and over because it does a brief mentions of profanity and sexuality.
