mbett (USA: MA) (2006/10/04): Dorothy Dunnett is simply the best writer of historical fiction I've ever encountered. Game of Kings is the first book in her Lymond Chronicles, which is a six book series that follows the adventures of Francis Crawford of Lymond, the second son of a Scottish nobleman, in his adventures across Renaissance Europe. There's mystery and political intrigue, action and adventure. Lymond is a perfect Renaiassance man, a scholar who quotes poetry at every turn, a soldier and a master plotter. Every time I pick up this book, I'm in trouble because I can't put it down. And then I can't put down the next one or the next one until i've re-read the whole series. It's one I re-read every so often because I get something new out of it every time.
