Caitie (Canada) (2008/06/22): "The needs of the poor have priority over the wants of the rich; the rights of the workers are more important than the macimization of profits; the participation of marginalized groups has precedence over a system which excludes them." With statements like this, Canada's Catholic bishops electrified the country early in 1983. The authors of "Ethical Reflections on the Economic Crisis" were denounced by politians and businessmen for shifting their gaze from the spiritual order to the economic one. yet the statement's call for economic strategies based on human justice struck a chord with many Canadians. The bishops had spoken out where no political party would. This book provides the background to the bishops' statement and takes the questions raised in it several steps further. The 1983 New Year's Statement is included, followed by two wide-ranging commentaries. Gregory Baum, a Catholic theologian with a world-wide reputation, explains the theological basis for the statement, and shows that it is not a raical evolution of Catholic social teaching. Political economist Duncan Cameron examines the validity of the bishops' critique, exploring such critical issues as unemployment and inflation, corporate concentration and foreign ownership, social cutbacks and government spending. Together, they provide a valuable introduction to the host of issues raised by the most-discussed political document of recent years.
